NICU Ambulance

GREENVILLE, S.C. — A South Carolina hospital recently unveiled a new neonatal intensive care ambulance to better transport ill newborns.

The Prisma Health Children’s Hospital ambulance will transport newborns delivered at other nearby hospitals to Prisma for special care, according to WYFF. A Children’s Hospital release noted its providers transport about 180 babies per year, some weighing less than one pound.

“What’s exciting about this vehicle is we get to bring the NICU team to those receiving hospitals,” said Prisma Health Upstate EMS Executive Director Aaron Dix. “So, these children, if they’re in duress, we’re able to care for them immediately.”

Dix said this is the hospital’s first new NICU ambulance in 11 years, and medical teams will be able to use updated technology to provide care.

Prisma Medical Director Robin LaCroix said the hospital can carry up to two babies at once and will help sick and premature newborns receive the treatment they need.

“We are delighted we can bring this to the Upstate community,” LaCroix said.
