— A firefighter used a strap to lasso a young victim of the crash to bring her to safety after the driver opened fire.
WADDELL, Ariz. — A driver involved in a vehicle crash opened fire on first responders when they arrived at the scene, according to officials.
FOX10 reported that the woman, who had crashed her vehicle in a desert area, began shooting at responders as they treated a young girl who had been injured in the crash, according to Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office.
“One of our engineers took cover behind a guard rail,” Rural Metro Fire Department Shawn Gilleland said. “Our firefighter who was treating the young girl on scene actually took cover behind the wrecked vehicle.”
The firefighter who was treating the girl used a strap to lasso her to safety.
“He was able to pull her towards him, where he had taken cover behind the wrecked vehicle and continue reassuring her and making sure she was OK until they could get everyone out of the scene,” Gilleland said.
Police said the woman refused to follow orders, and a SWAT team was called in for backup. The woman was eventually taken into custody by a K-9 deputy.
No one was hit by gunfire in the incident.
