CHP Helicopter Crews Keep Busy with Three Mountain Rescues

— The first rescue began at 7 a.m. Saturday when the crew of CHP helicopter H-16 got a call to help an injured camper in the area of Paynes Lake, in the mountains southwest of Etna.

MT. SHASTA – A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew found itself in the remote reaches of the North State most of the day Saturday on three rescues, helping hikers and others injured in the mountains of Siskiyou County.

The first rescue began at 7 a.m. Saturday when the crew of CHP helicopter H-16 got a call to help an injured camper in the area of Paynes Lake, in the mountains southwest of Etna.

The injured camper suffered a head injury the night before and had to be hoisted out by helicopter. He was flown out and transferred to another medical helicopter, which took him to Mercy Medical Center in Redding, the CHP said.

The second rescue began at 1 p.m. when the CHP received a report of a climber on Mt. Shasta reporting severe abdominal pain and possibly suffering from altitude sickness, the CHP said.

The climber was located at the 8,000-foot elevation on the mountain. The helicopter crew was able to hoist the climber into the helicopter and take the person to Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta.

By 2:30 p.m. the helicopter crew was on its way to another rescue, this time at Kangaroo Lake west of Callahan in western Siskiyou County.

Someone had fallen on rocks while jumping into the lake, suffering major fractures to both legs, the CHP said.

A CHP crew member “packaged” the fall victim, who was then hoisted into the helicopter, the CHP said. The CHP flew the victim out and met with an air ambulance, which flew the victim to the trauma center at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, the CHP said.
