WASHINGTON — Traffic stopped briefly on the George Washington Parkway on Tuesday afternoon as emergency responders rushed in with a helicopter to save a special K9.
Her name is Kylie.
“Kylie, in moving about, impaled on a section of hidden fence. It was a potentially fatal injury,” D.C. Fire and EMS Vito Maggiolo said.
Kylie has been with Sgt. Gene Ryan for five years.
As a cadaver dog, she has assisted with more than two dozen searches for human remains nationwide.
“Kylie, by recovering human remains, is able to bring closure to the families of those people who have no idea what happened to their loved ones,” Maggiolo said.

For that reason, U.S. Park Police and D.C. Fire and EMS stepped up to return the favor – saving Kylie’s life.
“We treated Kylie like we would treat one of our own firefighters who might have been severally injured. We want to get them to a hospital as soon as possible,” Maggiolo said.
Without the helicopter, Maggiolo says the outcome may have been different.
D.C. Fire and EMS say Kylie is doing well and could be released Wednesday.
