Sheboygan Fire Department Receives Award from Flight For Life

— Sheboygan Fire Department Chief Mike Romas accepted The Scene Call of the Year award from Flight For Life’s Jayce Commo.

SHEBOYGAN, WI – The Sheboygan Fire Department received the Scene Call of the Year award from Flight for Life on Monday, August 20, 2018, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

In addition to the Scene Call of the Year plaque, the department will receive a $500 education grant, a helicopter landing zone kit and recognition in EMS Professionals magazine.

To celebrate this award, a Flight For Life Helicopter landed in the grass field on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue near 4th Street at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20th.

Sheboygan Fire Department members proceeded from this location to the Sheboygan County Courthouse where the flight crew presented the award at the 6 p.m. start of the Common Council meeting.

Flight For Life serves two response areas in Wisconsin: the Fond du Lac base of operations began in 2008 and the Waukesha base was established in 1984. Each area has a 225-mile radius and to date this service has responded to over 37,000 accident-free missions.

A standard flight crew consists of a flight nurse and flight paramedic, but may also include specialty teams and a physician. The helicopter provides rapid and timely transport to the most appropriate facility while reducing out-of-hospital time for the patient. Advanced medical procedures similar to those performed in an emergency department are performed in the aircraft by the medical crew.
