HORRY COUNTY, S.C.  — On November 2, Horry County fire rescue received 194 emergency calls.

As reported by WPDE.com, Tony Casey, a spokesperson for the department, said that volume is not out of the ordinary and that sometimes they receive more than 200 calls a day.

Casey said that is one of the reasons the department is looking to hire over 40 Firefighter/EMT positions.

And as Horry County continues to grow, with the U.S. Census predicting the county could see more than half a million people by 2040, Casey said filling those positions is vital.

Casey said some of the positions were made possible through the approval of a FEMA grant for over $3.6 million.

“We received this grant money, which county council has helped us with by matching some of the funding, and now we’re looking for approximately 40 firefighter/EMT’s to work for us and help us field all these calls," said Casey.

Horry County Council matched the funding by giving HCFR more than $2.8 million, for things like turnout gear, uniforms, and increases in pay.

State benefits will be included for all of the positions.

Casey said the opportunities for advancement are very likely.

"They include state benefits, a lot comes through the state association also, but it’s a job that pays $36,200 for starting. It gets someone on a great team of people, who care about public service. We have this job to open up to the public and we’re getting a lot of applications in and we’re happy with what we’re seeing.," he said.

Casey said those positions can lead to promotions in the future.

"We’re always advancing people, we have awards ceremonies constantly. We have these ceremonies where we’ve turned someone from a volunteer into some of our leaders in the organization. So somebody can get in at the ground level and always advance through Horry County Fire Rescue," said Casey.

Casey said the positions don't have to be filled just by people who have prior experience. He said they are also looking to hire people who may not have any practical experience, but want to get into the fire service profession.

"We're willing to train someone from scratch, so if they’ve considered a role in the fire service at all this might be their way in the door to a really rewarding career," said Casey.

The department is accepting applications through Nov. 18. Supervisors will then review the applications, start the testing process for those applicants they have called, and then offers will be made. They said they expect their new firefighters to be in Horry County communities in the next few months.
