MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A flight paramedic was on his way to work when he helped save the life of a bus driver while at a stoplight.
Charles Longley, a firefighter paramedic at the Martinsburg, WV, Veterans Affairs Medical Center recently helped save a driver’s life when he took a wrong turn on his way to a doughnut shop.
Mr. Longley was waiting for a light to change after missing an exit when a woman knocked on his window and heard the horn of a school bus behind him; he quickly contacted dispatch for assistance.
“Who knows what would have happened if I hadn’t passed the exit by mistake, turned around and stopped for doughnuts on my way to work,” Longley said. “Everything happens for a reason.”
Longley found the bus driver slumped over the steering wheel; the driver had a weak pulse and was blue and unresponsive, reported the Herald Mail Media. Using a pocket mask given to him by a police officer, Longley performed rescue breaths. After 15 minutes, the driver regained consciousness and began breathing. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.
