EMT Steals $128K from Fire Station

The document, submitted by Special Agent R.K. Todd with the Financial Crimes Investigation Division, shows that Harold Jones began as an EMT with the organization, but after his certification expired in spring of 2014 he was no longer an employee.

He remained treasurer and began performing accounting services in spring 2014 but officials say it wasn’t a paid role and nobody with Ayden Rescue and EMS was aware Jones was getting a check.

However, according to the warrant payroll records show that between April of 2014 and January 2017 Jones was paid more than $128,000, including holiday pay and overtime.

The search was conducted at GUCU Credit Union in Greenville, where, according to Ayden Rescue and EMS records, Jones’ supposed paychecks were sent through direct deposit.

Although the document doesn’t itemize what was actually seized, it authorized investigators to gather bank statements that included deposit slips, cancelled checks, signature cards, passbooks and other such documents that pertain to the account in Jones’ name to which the money was deposited.

The department is nearly all volunteer. The town manager said last fall that Ayden Rescue and EMS is not a department of the Town of Ayden and receives no funding from it.

These are currently allegations and no charges have been filed at this time.
